Perry has the father of actors Laurie Metcalf, and Jeff Perry. In the ABC sitcom Roseanne (as as seen through flashback), her mother played Jackie Harris in two of Perry's early TV appearances. Fearing stress, her parents did not want to see the actress pursue acting until she reached the age of 18. Perry acknowledged that she was not comfortable acting in high school. However, she began performing as a means to make friends at Northwestern University after switching from Boston University. Perry managed to get minor TV roles in Law & Order: Criminal Intent after she graduated. The feeling of homelessness, however, brought her back to California to return, where she started performing on stage. Perry starred with her mother in The Other Place at Broadway, back in 2013. Kevin McKidd, her father Kevin McKidd performed in Eugene O'Neill's Pulitzer Prizewinning drama Anna Christie with her in 2015. Perry was a part of nine episodes in 2016 of the ABC drama The Family. Perry played a prominent role in the ABC political drama Scandal, starring her dad. In the same year, she appeared as a younger version of Mary Cooper on Young Sheldon (a CBS spinoff The Big Bang Theory), portraying her mother in a younger version. The character was assigned an audition to the actress, regardless of the fact that she is a relative with the character.
