Perry was born on July 25, 1968 in Chicago, Illinois to Laurie Metcalf Perry and Jeff Perry. The character Jackie Harris was played by her mother in both her two appearances on Roseanne. Perry did not decide to explore acting as a profession until after she had reached adulthood, as her parents were afraid of the negative impact stress might have. Perry acknowledged that she was not at ease in the stage during high school. However, she began doing it to connect with new people in Northwestern University after switching from Boston University. Perry was able to land minor TV roles in Law & Order: Criminal Intent after she graduated. However, her homesickness caused her to move to California and she returned working in the stage. She and her mother starred on Broadway together in The Other Place, in 2013. Perry was in Eugene O'Neill's Pulitzer Prize winner Anna Christie and Kevin McKidd. This was staged at West Los Angeles' Odyssey Theatre Ensemble. Perry was in nine episodes of the ABC thriller The Family in 2016. She had a regular role in the ABC drama about politics Scandal which starred her father. That same year the actress was selected to play a young version of Mary Cooper (Sheldon Cooper's mother) on Young Sheldon, a spin-off of the CBS sitcom The Big Bang Theory again portraying a younger version of her mother's role. Despite having a family connection to the character, she was offered the role via an audition.
