Perry was born to Laurie Metcalf (actor) and Jeff Perry (actor). Her first TV roles included two roles in the role of Jackie Harris (as seen in flashback) on The ABC sitcom Roseanne, the character portrayed by her mother. Perry was forbidden to start acting by her parents until she reached an adulthood stage, because they were concerned about the anxiety it could result in. Perry admitted that she wasn't at ease in the stage during high school. She began doing it to connect with new people during her time at Northwestern University after switching from Boston University. Perry moved to New York, where she got small roles on shows such as Law & Order: Criminal Intent. The feeling of homesickness caused Perry home to California which was where theatre jobs were readily available. Perry was a part of the cast with her mother on stage in The Other Place at Broadway the previous year. The show featured their father Kevin McKidd and Eugene O'Neill's Pulitzer Prize winning drama Anna Christie in the year 2015 on the Odyssey Theatre Ensemble, West Los Angeles. Perry appeared in nine episodes of the ABC thriller The Family in 2016. In 2017 she had a recurring role on The ABC Political thriller Scandal with her father. That same year her character was cast the younger character of Mary Cooper (Sheldon Cooper's mother) on Young Sheldon, a spin-off of the CBS sitcom The Big Bang Theory again playing a young character of her mom's role. Despite her family link to the character, she was offered the part through an audition.
